A major, and ancient pilgrim route between Baghdad and Makkah traveling through the northern part of this province means this area has always sustained a tide of holy visitors.
Since 1366H (1947) the province has seen enormous growth due to the construction and use of The Tapline (Trans Arabian Pipeline); a large pipeline for transporting oil from the eastern part of the Kingdom into Jordan and onto a port in Lebanon. The ‘major’ cities of Ar’ar, and the smaller cities of Rafha and Turaif all grew up around the oil pump-stations.
Beyond that, The Northern Borders is essentially a flat, stony desert, raised on a fairly high plateau (between 500 – 900m) and consisting of a soil that is not conducive to farming, although has great potential for caving enthusiasts and pot-holers.
It is also the perfect landscape for many of the unique animals which have adapted to this wild country, and Harrat al Harrah is a wilderness area which has been put aside. You can visit the reserve for camping at any time with a permit - but for two weeks of the year, visitors are limited for the truffle season.
Water is solely from wells in the Province, and can be salty and requires treatment before drinking. It’s suitable for washing. Generally, drinking water is supplied by trucks and a water treatment plant is under construction.
There are also 18 commercial markets; 4 hospitals; 60 medical clinics; 21 pharmacies; and 10 banks (main offices and branches).
Once you are here, you are about as 'there' as you can go in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. |
