The 35km Jeddah Corniche is a cultural landmark of Jeddah City. The refurbishment cost more than seven hundred million riyals, and took five years to complete. It's a popular place to promenade and to catch a sea breeze.
The boardwalk is lined with an open exhibition of monuments and sculptures by internationally famous sculptors and artists like Varselli, Henry Moore, and the French artist Ceasar, as well as a number of Saudi Arabian artists.
It's also possible to hire jet skis and enjoy sailboat races. There are numerous beach games and dolphin shows.
There is plenty of parking, and public sitting areas that welcome beach visitors, taking the form of boats anchored at the beach and built with water and weather resistant concrete.
It's also possible to take a boat ride down the corniche in the late afternoon, which is highly recommended as a peaceful way to view the city.
There are plenty of vendors selling ice cream, as well as traditional fast food made with chickpea and pickles (Balela). Stands (Koshok) are everywhere selling crackers, drinks, coffee and fresh juice.
Thuwal is a coastal town to the north of Jeddah, famous in local culture for its fishing industry. The town has also developed a beachfront area that is very popular in the evenings during the summer and public holidays. |
