450 species of fish are commonly associated with the Red Sea reefs, and significant marine species (notably green and hawksbill turtles) occur naturally in large numbers.
Dugong, otherwise known as the manatee or sea cow, are a large sea mammal that occur in small family groups. This very shy sea creature is believed to be the animal on which the myth of the mermaid is based.
Several species of whale and dolphin are also known to frequent the Red Sea.
The warm, safe and fish-abundant waters are exceptional for swimming, diving, snorkeling sailing and fishing all year round.
Diving off the coast at Jeddah is relatively simple, as the coral reef is a walk from the beach, then a drop to 25m - 40m of live coral wall.
Here you enter an astonishing world of weird and entrancing fish, rays, sharks and turtles. Among the most vivid are the Emperor Angelfish, Spotted Eagle Ray, Ghost Pipefish and Comet Longfin.
The most accessible diving is concentrated around Jeddah / Obhur Creek, where several hotels and private beaches provide access directly to the reef.
The reefs farthest from the shore are usually clear with up to 30 meters visibility, but are only diveable on calm days (about 70% of the time). The nearer reefs can have visibility of around 10 meters but are still excellent dive sites to explore.
Diving can be dangerous and requires training from a skilled (licensed) instructor before you go. The companies below offer a range of diving services for all levels (beginner, intermediate and expert).
